Our aim is to provide a space where gay people can meet and be themselves

LGC (Leeds Gay Community) was founded in September 1982 and is the direct descendant of gay groups which had been meeting since 1971. We meet regularly on Friday evenings, usually at a venue in Leeds city centre, just off the Headrow. The meetings start at 7.45 p.m.

We offer a number of different activities

The Friday meetings take several different forms. Sometimes we have visiting speakers on topics of gay or general interest. Sometimes members of the group lead discussions. At other times the focus shifts to the group itself as we discuss (not always seriously) matters of great or trivial importance. From time to time we watch a video recording. We even have parties.

We also meet elsewhere as our group tries to reflect our members’ needs and interests. We run a number of full-day or half-day trips (mostly in the summer months) to various places of interest in Yorkshire and further afield. These occasionally include a ramble and usually conclude with a meal in a restaurant or pub. From time to time there are trips to the theatre and cinema in Leeds and beyond. Most months there is an opportunity to meet other members as we ‘Eat Out’ at a local restaurant. Occasionally we have social events in members’ homes.

Although we are a members only group, visitors are very welcome

We do understand that people need to come to the group more than once before they decide that they want to join us. If visitors turn up to more than three meetings they will be expected to join us. Membership costs £10 per year (£5 for non-earners), but there are reduced rates for those joining during the year.

We hope that people who think of themselves as gay or bisexual, or their friends, will feel comfortable with us.

LGC welcomes new members and we are anxious to make them feel at home. If you would like to join us do have a word with one of the members. Also, if you have any ideas for future meetings or outing we will be happy to consider them.
